What is New in SQL Server 2008 Part 2

August 19, 2010 Comments off

This is the continuous on the Last post for What is new in SQL Server 2008, as i have said there is lot of new features introduced in SQL Server 2008 ,for more info please visit

1.       GEOGRAPHY and GEOMETRY data Types
GEOGRAPHY and GEOMETRY is new data types on SQL Server 2008 which will help us to store the location-based data into database directly

GEOGRAPHY – This represents the 3-dimensional of geodesy data (exact position of the geographical points)
GEOMETRY – This represents the 2-dimensional planar data of points on maps.

2.       Virtual Earth Integration

This will help to show the great quality of the graphical representation of the physical location that is stored in the databases. Using this we can display the location-based data for your application.

3.       DATE / TIME Data Types

DATETIME2 – stores the date time instead of system time for the perfect accuracy and the date time precision of 100 nanoseconds.
DATE / TIME – using this can store the Date and time data separately into the    database.

4.       Filtered Indexes

Filtered indexes supports WHERE condition also it includes only the matching rows so it delivered an improved performance. It will not have the entire row on the tables.

Using this we can optimize the performance of the specific query.

5.       SPARSE Column

It allows to store NULL data in table by not taking NULL value space.

6.       Partitioned table Parallelism

This allows query run faster against partitioned table. Where system is having multiple processors SQL 2008 uses the parallel processing against partitioned table query, which improves the query response time.

7.       Data Profiling

SQL Server Integration Services includes the Data profiling task. Using this task we can easily identify of rows, NULL, Distinct values. We can read the profiling data using the data profiling viewer

You will be wondering why i jump to This Topic without having any explanation about SQL 2005 topic. as many of you upgrading from 2000 to 2008 and the latest version of SQL Server is SQL 2008 R2. so i have decided to cover the What is new in all the Latest version then we will move to Topic by Topic. there are the lot of features introduced in SQL Server 2008 for more info please visit

1. Data Compression
Data compression reduces the space to store tables ,indexes. so we have ability to use more spaces by using data compression.

2. Transparent Data Encryption
Data can be stored securely by encrypting the database files. Normally if the disk is encrypted it can de-encrypted by an authorized agent.we will not be having a direct control on it. however SQL server can encrypt and de-encrypt directly ,so the application can read the encrypted data.

3. Data Auditing
It has ability to track and logs related to the databases and server ,later we can audit logons, password changes and many events we can track. this will help to troubleshoot the problem. also this can be saved as a file or event logs.

4. Resource Governor
The Resource Governor will help to allocate CPU and memory resources to high priority applications.

5. Hot-Add CPUs and Hot-Add Memory
This features available with the SQL Server Enterprise 64-Bit Edition.SQL has the ability to add CPU dynamically to the does not require any reboot or Limitation to the number of client connections.

6. Server Group Management
We can Query T-SQL on single centralized management Server into a Single result set.

7. Upgrade Advisor
This will help to identify any issues for an upgrade

 8. Partition Aligned Indexed Views
Indexed Views now can be created in order to the partitioning scheme of the table that the index referenced.

9. Backup Compression
Backup compression is now possible in 2008 and this will compress the database backup without compressing the database . this is supported for all the backup types. automatically backup will uncompressed when the restore happens.

10. MERGE Operator
New MERGE operator streamline the process of populating a data warehouse source databases. MERGE statement will help to identify the difference between source and Destination database changes (insert, update).

Last Topic we have seen what are all the SQL Server Version Released So far. already SQL Server 2000 Mainstream supports has ended and MS support 2000 SP4 and this will also gets end soon. so we will focus on the recent version SQL Server 2005 and 2008. Now i am going to Provide What is New in SQL Server 2005.

Net CLR Integration:
We can write User-Defined Data type, triggers, functions,Stored Procedures in any .Net Languages.
New XML data type:
We can store xml data into an own column of xml data type.
Error Handling :
We can write error handling using TRY-Catch.
DDL Triggers :
This trigger will fire when the Created and alter or drop statement.
Failover Clustering:
Failover clustering is extended to 8 nodes on 32-bit systems and 4 nodes on 64 bit systems.
Database Mirroring:
This is a new features introduced on SQL Server 2005. using this we can configure stand-by database to database.note it has not come default with the RTM version. need to apply SP1 or later to configure mirroring. in RTM we need enable the trace flag to configure mirroring.
Multiple Active Result Sets :
Multiple SQL statement to return result set at the same time of execution on the single connection
DTS Removed :
No more DTS from SQL Server 2005 and later version as it has introduced SQL server Integration services. This is the Primary ETL tool with free of charge.
Dedicated administrator Connection:
Formally called as DAC. This will help Administrator to access running instance of SQL Databases to figure out the    problems even if the SQL server is unresponsive to client.
SMTP Mails:
SQL Server 2000 also sent mail directly however MS SQL 2005 will directly interact with SMTP.
Data Encryption:
Data encryption is possible on user databases on MS SQL 2005.
Service Broker:
Service Broker handles messaging between sender and receiver about coupled manner.Message can be sent a queue on the same databases and receive the message on different database on the same instance or the remote instance.
